Stillpoint Motto

Shan Cunningham is a self-trained naturalist photographer. He has traveled from the Arctic to the Antarctic for his floral, landscape, and animal images.

Cunningham's "still point" can be seen in the first milkweed seed pulled by the wind from its pod or a butterfly resting for a split second on a perfect flower.

The poetry of Cunningham's camera eye, compatible with his nationally-recognized knowledge as a wildflower botanist, is in sharp contrast to his history as a Green Beret medic and later as a civilian firefighter and medic.

40 new images were introduced by North Dakota Nature Photographer Shan Cunningham. One Photographer with the foresight to find the right place at the right time produces stunning photographs. The palest pink transforms through purple to the flame orange of a prairie sunrise in a 4 shot series. A mustang stallion stands guard over two grazing mares. The tumble of fall leaves invites you down a wooded path. Shan Cunningham takes you on a nature tour, through his eyes you see natures abstract designs in flowers, a buffalo so close he can cloud the lens with his breath and native orchids most people never notice.

Other photography by Cunningham can be seen in the North Dakota Outdoors Magazine, North Dakota Outdoors Calendar, Rock Garden Plants of North America, Montana Outdoors, the Audubon Society Field Guide to Wild Flowers - Western Region and the Territory Ahead Catalog.
